Celebrating citizenship

A citizenship ceremony is the final step in becoming an Australian citizen. At Murrumbidgee Council, we proudly host citizenship ceremonies on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs with our mayor officiating on behalf of the minister.

The Australian Government manages and allocates the people who will receive their official citizenship at each ceremony. We receive the names of each candidate about 6 weeks before a ceremony. We then send invitations advising candidates of their ceremony details. Family and friends are welcome to attend as well.

After a person's Australian citizenship is approved, it may take between 6 to 12 months for candidates to receive an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony.
